My Story as a Young Maasai Girl

By Caren Naeku Dapash

Caren Naeku Dapash - Founder of Nasieku Luxury Creations

I was born in a small village called Olokurto, nestled in the heart of Narok. My father was a priest, and because of his calling, our family moved often. Those early days shaped me in ways I would only come to understand later. Though life meant adapting to new places and faces, my childhood was filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting rhythm of family. Growing up in a Christian home, I was surrounded by values that became the foundation of who I am today—discipline, integrity, and faith.

One of my most cherished memories is learning beadwork from my grandmother, Nasieku, whose name I proudly carry. I remember sitting beside her as she strung beads with grace and patience, her fingers telling stories as old as the hills. Through her gentle voice and her art, I learned not just how to bead, but how to listen—to culture, to wisdom, and to the silent stories hidden in every color.

Unlike many of my peers, I was fortunate. I was not subjected to harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, which was a common rite of passage in many Maasai communities. My Christian upbringing protected me from those experiences, yet I still embraced the beautiful parts of our culture—the songs, the dances, and the deep sense of community that defined who we were.

Education became my doorway to the world. I joined Ole Ntutu Aride Zone at a tender age, far from my village, and later continued through secondary school and university. I grew up dreaming of a white-collar job, imagining myself in offices and boardrooms. But as time went by, my heart led me somewhere else—to the world of business and community empowerment.

While I didn't face the harshest challenges myself, I witnessed the pain of many young Maasai girls who did—girls denied education, forced into early marriages, or burdened by early pregnancies. Their struggles lit a fire in me to make a difference. I learned that the best way to overcome challenges is to remain focused, to believe in purpose, and to surround yourself with people who believe in you.

Today, I am proud to be the CEO and Founder of Nasieku Luxury Creations, a fashion brand inspired by Maasai heritage and luxury. I am also the Founder of Caren Naeku Networks, a foundation dedicated to empowering young girls in my community—helping them find hope, education, and dignity. Beyond titles and achievements, I am most blessed to be a mother of two amazing boys, Trever and Travis, who remind me every day why I must keep going.

My journey as a young Maasai girl taught me that change begins with courage, and courage begins with a single voice. I aspire to be that voice—the voice of the voiceless, an ambassador of change and good culture, and a living example that tradition and progress can coexist beautifully. My name is Caren Naeku Dapash, and this is my story—a story of faith, family, and purpose.
